Welcome Remarks &
Keynote Presentation: The Importance of Coatings Science in Forensic Investigations

Skip Palenik, President and Senior Research Microscopist, Microtrace LLC
It may not strike the coatings scientist or formulator that their daily work could have an impact on the solution of many of the crimes they hear about in the media or see on television. This presentation will show, by examples from the presenter’s casebook, the importance of paint traces as evidence in real-life cases ranging from hit and run accidents and homicides to the oldest murder re-trial in this country to the Green River Murders, the biggest serial murder case in U. S. history.

New Latex Chemistry for Low-VOC Coatings Requiring Exterior Durability with Superior Surfactant Leaching Resistance
Christine Fortener, Senior Technical Account Coordinator, Arkema Coating Resins

Regulatory and environmental pressures continue to increase on exterior waterborne coatings, while expectations of coatings performance grow. Application conditions are stretched to allow for wider painting windows. Low-VOC coatings can present new performance issues when application conditions are not ideal. Resistance to surfactant staining can be particularly challenging. Painting in low-temperature and high-humidity environmental conditions tends to promote surfactant leaching issues. New resin technology in combination with proper formulating strategies enables architectural coatings formulators to construct coating systems that significantly minimize surfactant leaching. This new technology is a strong binder choice for zero- and low-VOC exterior masonry coatings, commercial building repaint needs and interior semigloss tint base coatings where robust water resistance is needed. Excellent water resistance capabilities balanced with strong block resistance, hardness and film toughness for interior and exterior low-VOC coatings can be achieved.
