Smart, Multifunctional and Responsive Materials

With increased demands for coatings that can sense their environment and perform multifunctional tasks has emerged a new class of materials. This new millennium will see rapid advances in these types of “state-of-the-art” chemicals that are often referred to as smart and multifunctional materials/coatings. This class includes materials such as shape-switching polymers and coatings with on-commend responses, autonomous and diagnostic, stimuli-responsive, biologically active, self-healing, shape memory, photo-catalytic, super hydrophobic, color shifting and certain nano-engineered materials. This presentation will discuss the science and technology of such materials, present pathways and examples of technologies, and highlight current global research and development trends. Additionally, it will discuss the preparation and application of stimuli-responsive catalyst that can be activated at low temperatures, thereby converting a 2K coating system to a simple 1K formulation with extended shelf life.
